Bioeconomy Innovation
This conference track explores the innovation landscape and business opportunities within the bioeconomy. It takes place on Wednesday, August 27, and offers valuable insights for businesses in the bio-based sector, while also inspiring researchers interested in innovation and collaboration.
The program aims to provide a broader outlook on international collaboration and the future role of the bioeconomy in Europe’s industrial policy. Key developments in bio-based technologies, emerging materials, and successful cases of industrial implementation will be highlighted.
Keynote Speaker
Jukka Kantola, founder and CEO of the World Bioeconomy Forum and Chair of the World Bioeconomy Association, will deliver the keynote. He will share his perspective on the latest trends in the bioeconomy and the opportunities for innovation across sectors.
A status of the global bioeconomy – Tracking developments, shaping the future of the global bioeconomy
The global bioeconomy, valued at over €4 trillion today, holds the potential to expand to €30 trillion by 2050. This keynote explores the shifting landscape of the bioeconomy in a world moving from globalisation toward increasing polarisation - where collaboration risks giving way to regional fragmentation. Against this backdrop, the bioeconomy emerges as both a challenge and a transformative opportunity to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable resource use.
Drawing on recent milestones, including the adoption of the G20 High-Level Principles on the Bioeconomy, the growing number of national bioeconomy strategies, and new financing mechanisms presented at the G20 in Rio de Janeiro, the keynote outlines the momentum and urgency of this transition. At its heart lies a threefold vision - bioresource, biotechnology, and bioecology - ensuring a balanced, adaptable, and globally interconnected approach.
Particular attention is given to the Biorevolution, driven by biotechnology and digitalisation, which could define the next industrial era. Yet, Europe must act decisively to convert its scientific leadership into industrial competitiveness. Success will depend on financing scale-ups, harmonising metrics and standards, and building cross-sectoral cooperation.
The session concludes with a call for leadership and clarity: the bioeconomy is no longer a niche agenda but a central driver of sustainability and competitiveness.
